Our First Pumpkin

is here, lol! Well, when we planted our garden this year we did not plant any pumpkins. We planted some cucumbers and zucchini by our back fence and thought to ourselves....what was this plant that was growing next to the fence and asked each other if the other had planted it. We both said no...we did not plant anything next to the fence and let it grow to see what it was and low and behold it turned out to be a pumpkin!!! Once we realized it was a pumpkin, my husband said he threw last years Fall pumpkins into the garden and must have tilled the seed this spring. We have a small sized garden and never planted pumpkins before so I was excited!! Yes, I get excited easy, lol! The plant has produced two small sized pumpkins...the one in the picture is turning orange and the other is just starting to turn. I cannot wait until I can place then on my front porch. I think next year we will include them in our garden!

What a nice surprise! I grew up on a farm with all kinds of animals. Our pigs pen grew the most wonderful gourds from all the different vegetables that we had fed the pigs. Enjoy your pumpkins!

Volunteers always bring a smile to my face when they show up in the garden. I guess it has to do with their determination to make it, so I usually don't pull them out, whatever they happen to be. Sort of a gift for nature.

Enjoy your pumpkins and it's nice to see you posting again.

That happened to us last year but they were in direct sun. We went on vacation, the kids didn't water enough . . . . but it was fun to watch while it lasted!

Good luck with yours!

My son and his wife planted mini one and they came in early, so have a few of those. I think she planted regular ones last week, so maybe we will get some nice ones in time for fall decorating.

I had the same thing happen! Hubby just brought in our big orange pumpkin over the weekend. Check it out on my blog - http://stoneyhillcabin.blogspot.com

There's another one growing too. We lost one to raccoons I think, but to get two pumpkins when I didn't plant them...great. I also have some sunflowers I didn't plant.

I had four this year but the weather didn't help out and they matured too fast and rotted on the vine ..Looks like yours is right on schedule! Love your nlog! Cindy ( Illinois)

I am still hoping to find some volunteer pumpkin or gourd plants but if there this year they are hiding well.
Yours seem to be doing fine on their own.

Thanks everyone for sharing!!! I love getting those kind of surprises! I also had some petunias seed themselves in my flower boxes this year.
